The term "Chinese paper cutting" refers to handicrafts created by cutting red paper with scissors to form various patterns, which the Chinese people stick on walls, windows, doors, and ceilings. With its long history, the art of paper cutting, which originated in China, has gained great popularity among the general public.
The beginnings of this art form were closely linked to Chinese rural festivals, where people would hang paper scraps on walls, windows, and doors during weddings and festivals to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Chinese paper cuttings are rich in symbolic content; auspicious designs symbolize good luck and the expulsion of evil, while designs of children, lotuses, and gourds signify the desire for many offspring. Domestic birds, livestock, fruits, fish, and worms are also among the familiar elements depicted by Chinese peasants in their works.
